The Global Water Partnership (GWP) defines it as “the process of development and coordinated management of water, land, and related resources to maximize social and economic welfare, equitably and sustainably, without compromising the sustainability of ecosystems.”

- Ecological Sustainability: Ensure the recognition, protection, and enhancement of water ecosystems with a responsible use of their natural resources, ensuring their functioning and maintenance over time.
