The Sanitation and Wastewater Treatment Entity of the Region of Murcia (ESAMUR) and the Group of Food Companies of Murcia (AGRUPAL) have been working together for months to promote good practices in wastewater treatment in the food industry.
According to the Minister of Water, Agriculture, Livestock, Fisheries, and the Environment, Antonio Luengo:
“The goal of the regional government is to achieve excellence in water cycle management. We are world leaders in treatment, regeneration, and reuse. This is another commitment from our president, Fernando López Miras, to the environment and involves increasingly betting on treatment and continuing to invest in the necessary water regeneration.
Therefore, we must continue to bet and work alongside the sector. In this case, the department has worked very closely with Agrupal, with the aim of creating a document that identifies the techniques to be applied in each industry to minimize discharges into the municipal sanitation area.
It is a thorough and serious job that seeks to provide tools to all entrepreneurs in the agri-food industry to identify their different industrial processes and act in these processes to minimize, as much as possible, the discharge of pollutants that could endanger the wastewater treatment process at the sewage treatment plant.”
The document referred to by the minister is a brochure jointly developed by these two entities, aiming to promote and disseminate good practices in wastewater treatment.
One of the strong points of this document is the awareness of the need for careful maintenance and proper management of the companies’ treatment plants. This brochure is a continuation of the Good Practices Manual developed in 2020 as part of the training and dissemination activities of these organizations, allowing industries in the region to choose, according to their sector, the most suitable technology to operate.
Periodic Inspections and Effluent Control
ESAMUR and its Effluent Control Department conduct periodic inspections to ensure that companies comply with current regulations and treatment requirements. In 2021, 959 visits and 615 samples were taken.
Additionally, continuous training sessions, workshops, and seminars are conducted for companies seeking to educate and raise awareness about the need to reduce pollution and carry out proper waste treatment.
